The ability to take criticism constructively and to work through trouble with a level head are vital to an open communication policy. - Point out the positive: Do not hesitate to tell a staff member who has done well that you are pleased with his work. People need to know that they are appreciated; this is just as true for management as it is for labor. Remember that people work for you, not just nameless employees, and that people respond well to encouragement.
- Train, train, train: Training can be expensive and seem like a waste of time, but it is vital. Without proper training, staff will not be aware of the nuances of your business. This will become glaringly obvious when you review negative customer feedback–and it will be no one’s fault but your own.
